Role in Society

  • A Prioress is "just below the abbes (head) of a covenant" 

  • She would be the head nun of an Abbey

  • Her responsibilities included:

    • Taking care of the internal and external affairs of her abbey

    • Discipline & Organization

    • Making sure the well-being of her covenant is kept

  • She most likely came from a wealthy family

  • Normally nuns were forbidden to go on pilgramages

    • However since she is a Prioress, not subject to strict rules of nuns
